NIA Centre is partnering with the City of Grand Rapids to participate in Community Master Plan Round 4! This will be an open house-style event with posters listing recommendations and collecting feedback on what is being proposed. Please join us in providing feedback on the draft recommendations of the plan, related to Great Neighborhoods, Balanced Mobility, Desirable Development Character, Strong Economy, and Vital Business Districts.
This immersive audio-exhibition aims to highlight the Black experience through a social justice lens, featuring music from local artists, and visual projections that reflect diverse cultural narratives and historical artifacts provided by GRAMMA.
Jamon Alexander is the president and CEO of the West Michigan Center for Arts & Technology. This interview will be full of information on how Jamon got into his position as the CEO/president and how his experience has been navigating this position as a Black man.

This program aims to provide emerging and existing African American business owners with entrepreneur education courses, micro-enterprise loan courses, intellectual property, and contracts courses that will benefit their business in the short term and the sustainable scalable future.
The city of Grand Rapids is creating a new Community Master Plan (CMP) that will define the vision of how our city will grow and develop over the next 20 years. A CMP can address topical concepts related to land use such as equity, housing, environmental justice, and economic development. The last plan is from 2002 and it’s time for a new one.

This November, NIA Centre is featuring a special guest entrepreneur on the How Excellent We Are GR Instagram Live series. Kayla Morgan is the founder of Resilient Roots Wellness where she is a self-proclaimed self-love activist. She is on a mission to create safe spaces for all to change the narrative of their lives by practicing “I am” affirmations and developing their authentic yoga practice. This will be a great episode about health, wellness, and life as an entrepreneur that you won’t want to miss!

The My Story 5 event will graphically depict how African Americans have been impacted by prejudice, bigotry, racism, and negative stereotypes. In addition, the exhibition will graphically display how these issues have led to African Americans constantly being subject to trauma threatening their physical and mental health. This major art exhibition will feature artwork created by emerging African American artist Esan Sommersell. The collection will tell an impactful story that will challenge the exhibition attendees not to be silent about these critical issues that harm African Americans. The exhibit is an effort to provide art access, promote civic discussion, find solutions, and prompt action through equity in art by highlighting the talent of emerging artist Esan Sommersell. Mr. Sommersell’s skills have been recognized by local, national, and internationally respected artists John McDonald and Paul Collins.

Free backpack and school supplies giveaway. To help support project backpack we are collecting backpacks and school supplies at NIA Centre. Our address is 300 Commerce Ave and we are accepting drop offs until Tuesday, August 22 between 10 AM - 4PM. The giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 26 at Alger Middle School located at 921 Alger St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49507.
